Jason Thornton

Conductor - Press

"Conductor Jason Thornton has met very successfully with the massive soundscape of Mahler. Now he is enjoying an exploration of the magic of Mozart.
The two symphonies, 31 & 38, Prague, conducted without a score, were given an outing which was full of lively good humour – music with a smile. The Paris, a less substantial work, showed us some fine string playing and the final Allegro whirled along, taking no prisoners. The Prague allowed the brass and woodwind to show us their craft, and the piece had real urgency and rhythmic vitality, with a measured yet crisp Andante. The whole feel was extrovert, taken con brio, through to a breathless presto finale: great playing.'

"…under the lash of Thornton’s baton, Rhapsody in Blue bowled us over."
Miles Kington – The Independent

"Schubert's Great C Major Symphony really lived up to its name. Jason Thornton was totally involved – no need for a score – and his infectious enthusiasm produced a performance of considerable effervescence and inexhaustible energy in this long work. It was a wonderful re-creation of one of the finest works in the orchestral repertoire and I don't recall better playing from Bath Phil. A resounding bravo to Jason Thornton and his players. They left us breathlesss but enormously uplifted."

"…Quintessentially English, Thornton's Elgar is a very rare commodity for the West Coast."
The Seattle Times

"Thornton drew a standing ovation as conductor of Bath Philharmonia's Façade evening, with soprano Isabel Buchanan reading Edith Sitwell's comic prose, at Longleat House's Great Hall."
